Common Questions About Local Services

The NDIS Provider Finder tool at ndis.gov.au allows you to search for registered providers by location, support type, and disability. You can filter by Newcastle or the broader Hunter Region. Your Support Coordinator or LAC can also recommend providers they have worked with and trust. Safe Hands Disability is a registered NDIS provider covering Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, and surrounding areas — contact us to discuss your needs.
NDIS services are funded through your individual NDIS plan and delivered by registered providers. Many government services (such as GP care, public schools, hospital care, and Centrelink payments) are available to everyone regardless of NDIS status — these are called "mainstream services." The NDIS does not fund supports that are the responsibility of mainstream systems. Understanding this boundary helps you plan your NDIS funding effectively without duplicating what is freely available through other channels.
Yes. Hunter Advocacy Service and Disability Advocacy NSW both provide free, independent disability advocacy in the Hunter Region. They can assist with NDIS appeals, provider complaints, rights information, and attendance at meetings. Legal assistance for NDIS matters is also available through Hunter Community Legal Centre. These are funded by government grants and are completely free to the person with disability.
Newcastle has several transport options for people with disability: (1) Opal concession card for reduced-fare buses and light rail; (2) Transport NSW's Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme for eligible participants; (3) Community transport through Hunter Community Transport for door-to-door service; (4) NDIS transport funding in your plan if you cannot use public transport due to disability; (5) Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) for accessible parking. Your Support Coordinator can help you access the right combination of transport options for your situation.
No — Carer Gateway and NDIS carer supports are separate. Carer Gateway (1800 422 737) is a Commonwealth-funded service specifically for unpaid carers — providing free coaching, counselling, peer support, and emergency respite. It is available regardless of whether the person being cared for is on the NDIS. NDIS Short-Term Accommodation (respite) is funded within the NDIS participant's plan and is specifically for the participant's care needs. Both can be used simultaneously — they complement each other rather than duplicating services.
Employment support in the Hunter Region is available through: (1) Disability Employment Services (DES) — free, Commonwealth-funded, with multiple providers across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and Maitland; (2) NDIS-funded employment supports under Capacity Building — Finding and Keeping a Job (if in your plan); (3) Australian Disability Enterprises for supported employment; (4) JobAccess for employer-related reasonable adjustment assistance. Safe Hands Disability provides NDIS employment capacity building supports — contact us to discuss how we can help you achieve employment goals.
